To support environmental policy, the EAL organized experts into special multidisciplinary work groups to execute particular integrated research projects. It recently completed a large scale environmental assessmentin Laojie River, Dongshan River, Wu River, Houjin River, Erren River, Niuchou River, Dahan River, and Jilong River, including moniroring levels of heavy metals and POPs in the sediments or animal tissues. The EAL continues to monitor river sediments, water, PCB content in biological organisms, heavy metals and dioxins in 34 rivers and estuary in Taiwan.

The results of special research projets that required the expertise of each EAL division and the results of large-scale integrated research projects are published in "the EAL's Annual Scientific Report” to upgrade testing level and communicate those experiences.

To accurate assessments of environmental impact and health risks, the Third Division has been working on developing the ultra-trace metals and speciation analytical technologies, for example, the determination of trace metals in drinking water using ICP-MS, direct determination of trace metals in seawater by ICP-MS, ultra-trace mercury, methylmercury and arsenic species analysis in environment samples. In addition, we also have been making efforts to set up the specific methods, such as XRF and XRD, for rapid screen and environmental forensics. About the results we studied were published in "the EAL's Annual Scientific Report" and these were contributed to set up environmental protection policy.
