EPA Launches New Environmental Options on Food Delivery App

For the first time, the EPA is collaborating with the food delivery service Foodpanda, the Environmental Protection Bureau of Tainan City Government and reusable container suppliers to organize a trial program that promotes environmentally friendly delivery services. The program is available in Western Central, Eastern and Northern Districts of Tainan City from 9 November 2020 to 4 January 2021. The program allows consumers to opt for reusable containers for their purchases on the ordering page of the Foodpanda app, and return the containers to specified locations to acquire discount codes.

Food delivery services have become very popular lately. According to the statistics provided by the National Credit Card Center of R.O.C. (NCCC), the revenue generated by food delivery services exceeded NT$5,000 million in the first half of 2020. During this time, the food delivery services also used 670 metric tons of disposable containers and tableware, putting a significant burden on the environment. To reduce the use of disposal containers and establish a circular model for food container use, the EPA is working with private companies to test the feasibility and applicability of using reusable containers in the food delivery industry.

The EPA held a Zero-Waste Food Delivery Press Conference in National Cheng Kung University on 9 November 2020 to announce the start of the program. Consumers in the participating districts can first search for the business account Goodtogo on the LINE app and join the membership. They can then opt for reusable containers while purchasing from the 22 participating restaurants. After a meal, consumers are to clean the containers and return them within three days at any of the 30 return locations. The returned containers will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before being reused again to ensure hygienic and environmental health.

The program is completely voluntary and does not require extra cost to encourage public participation. Any participating consumers, upon returning the containers, can acquire a discount code for a NT$30 discount on a future purchase from Foodpanda.
